Ebisu Drift Matsuri: A Celebration of Drifting

What is the Ebisu Drift Matsuri?

Ebisu Drift Matsuri, a thrilling event held at the Ebisu Circuit in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima prefecture, Japan.

The Ebisu Drift Matsuri is the birthplace of the original "Drift Matsuri." In Japanese, "matsuri" means "festival." Held three times a year—during Spring, Summer, and Autumn—the matsuri is a 31-hour non-stop drifting extravaganza that stretches over an entire weekend. It kicks off at 9 am on Saturday and continues through the night until the checkered flag waves at 4 pm on Sunday. Spectators and drifters alike immerse themselves in the lively festival atmosphere, making it a world-famous event that draws both local Japanese enthusiasts and international drifters.

What Happens During the Matsuri?

  • Non-Stop Drifting: The heart of the matsuri lies in the relentless drifting action. Participants have access to all seven tracks at Ebisu Circuit, including the Higashi (east) and West (nishi) courses, which are usually closed for drifting on regular days.

  • Night time Thrills: As the sun sets, the excitement doesn't wane. Night-time drifting adds an extra layer of intensity, with cars sliding sideways under the floodlights.

  • Community Unity: Enthusiasts from around the globe come together to celebrate their shared passion. Whether you're behind the wheel or cheering from the sidelines, everyone is part of the experience.

Seasonal Vibes

Each matsuri has its unique flavor:

  1. Spring Matsuri (Golden Week): Taking place during early May, the Spring matsuri coincides with cherry blossom season in Tokyo. While it's too early for blossoms around Ebisu Circuit, the weather is cool and sunny. Bring a jacket for the chilly nights.

  2. Summer Matsuri (August): August brings the Summer matsuri, which aligns with the O-Bon summer holiday in Japan. Expect scorching heat and humidity or occasional rain. Stay hydrated and ensure your car has proper cooling systems.
  3. Fall Matsuri (November): The Fall matsuri boasts the largest turnout of cars and spectators. November weather is cold during the day and even colder at night. Bundle up with a big jacket, gloves, and a beanie.

Mark Your Calendar

While the dates are roughly the same each year, they're officially announced in January. Keep an eye out for the exact Drift Matsuri dates around February. Attending the Ebisu Drift Matsuri is a bucket-list experience for any drifting fan
